I have a fault with the sub-woofer speaker in my Wharfedale DX1-HCP 5.1 AV system, which is about 5 years old and therefore out of warranty. All the passive speakers are functioning normally, only the active sub-woofer has a problem.
A few weeks ago whilst listening to music a spurious loud cracking sound was produced which sounded like a firework had gone off in the room. The cracking sound was repeated at the same point in the track when played again. There had been no subsequent problems until a few days ago, when listening to a TV programme through the 5.1 system, the low frequency component of the sound just disappeared.
The two fuses are OK, confirmed by the mains neon at the front, and the LED at the back of sub-woofer which are both illuminated. The AV amplifier generated tone through the sub-woofer generates no sound or displacement of air. Adjustment of sub-woofer frequency/volume/phase has no impact. There is no sound distorted or otherwise therefore it does not appear to be a blown speaker or cone.
